Summary

Journey from Sarajevo to Kotor with stops in Mostar and Blagaj

You’ll travel from Sarajevo to Kotor with stops in Konjic, Jablanica’s war memorial, Mostar’s Old Bridge, Blagaj Tekke, and Počitelj village. Expect stories from your local guide, lunch by the river, and time to wander historic streets—plus all transport and entry fees included. It’s more than just getting from A to B; these are moments you’ll remember long after the drive ends.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I remember is the way the air changed as we left Sarajevo—pine trees fading into rocky hills, then suddenly that blue-green Neretva river flashing below us. Our driver, Emir, kept pointing out things I’d never have noticed: a cluster of wildflowers by the road, or the old Ottoman bridge in Konjic. He told us how it was rebuilt stone by stone after the war. I tried to imagine what it must’ve looked like before—hard to picture with all the laughter from a group of local kids fishing nearby.

We stopped at Jablanica for a quick walk around the memorial complex. There’s this broken bridge over the river that just hangs there—kind of haunting, honestly. Emir explained about the Battle on the Neretva and how they saved so many wounded crossing right here. The wind picked up and you could smell woodsmoke from someone’s lunch drifting down from the hills. I didn’t expect to feel much at a war memorial but… well, it sticks with you.

Mostar was busy—tourists everywhere—but our guide steered us through quieter alleys where old men played chess under grapevines. The Old Bridge is as dramatic as everyone says but what got me was watching a diver stand there forever before finally jumping (everyone clapped). Lunch was grilled trout by the river; I can still taste that lemony tang. Afterward we wandered through Blagaj, where cold water bursts straight out of a cliff beside a white Sufi monastery. My feet were sore but I didn’t care—there was this calmness in the air and even the birds seemed quieter.

Počitelj came last, just before we crossed into Montenegro—a jumble of stone houses on a hill above olive groves. We climbed up to the fortress (my legs protested) and looked out over everything we’d just driven through. Then back in the van for winding roads toward Kotor Bay. It’s funny how you start out thinking it’s just a transfer from Sarajevo to Kotor, but somewhere along those rivers and ruins it turns into something else entirely.
