The experience

I didn’t expect to start my Sarajevo Grand Tour sipping thick Bosnian coffee in a courtyard older than most countries. The air smelled like roasted beans and copper polish: our guide, Emir, grinned as he showed us how to swirl the grounds just right. I tried to copy him but mostly ended up with a mouthful of grit. He laughed and said everyone does that their first time. That’s when I realized this day would be less about ticking off sights and more about feeling the city breathe around me.

We wandered through Baščaršija bazaar, past men hammering patterns into copper trays: one of them waved us in for a quick demo. The sound echoed down the narrow street. Emir pointed out Sarajevo’s “meeting of cultures” spot where East really does meet West. You can literally stand with one foot in Ottoman-era stonework and another on Austro-Hungarian pavement. I’d read about it, but standing there felt weirdly moving. Maybe it was the way people just flowed past each other without noticing.

The Sarajevo Tunnel Museum hit harder than I expected. We ducked into the low passageway under the airport runway. The same tunnel that kept people alive during the siege. There’s a short film inside. I caught myself holding my breath as survivors described crawling through mud and darkness to bring food home. Outside again, light felt sharper somehow.

Driving up Trebević mountain, we passed old war frontlines: Emir pointed out sniper positions from back then. The abandoned Olympic bobsleigh track is covered in wild graffiti now. Kids were skateboarding where athletes once sped by. It’s strange how quickly places change their meaning. From up there, Sarajevo spreads out below you (a patchwork of red roofs and minarets), and for a second everything goes quiet except for wind in the trees.
