You can actually ride a bike down the abandoned Olympic bobsleigh track.

Trebevic Mountain biking tour from Sarajevo climbs the olympic mountain on asphalt and gravel, then descends the 1984 Winter Olympics bobsleigh and luge track on two wheels: one of only a few in the world where that's possible. The route covers around 25 kilometers with 1,170 meters of elevation gain, passing Sniper Alley from above and ending through Sarajevo's narrow streets. Lunch and all gear included.

The experience

Trebevic Mountain rises 1,627 meters southeast of Sarajevo, and this ride uses it as a frame for two very different stretches of cycling. The first half climbs roughly 10 kilometers of asphalt road (the same road that served as a front line during the 1992–95 war), then branches onto 4 kilometers of gravel to reach the summit. From there you pick a trail between 3 and 7 kilometers long depending on what suits the group and the conditions that day. The elevation gain across the whole ride is 1,170 meters.

What sets this tour apart is the descent: the Sarajevo Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track, built for the 1984 Winter Games and damaged during the war, sits on the mountainside overlooking the city. The track itself no longer runs bobsleds or luges, but bikes can navigate it: one of only a handful of Olympic bobsleigh tracks in the world where that's actually possible. After the track run, you choose another trail on the way down, then finish by riding through the narrow streets back into the city center. You'll also get a vantage point over Sniper Alley from above, seeing the geography of a place that shaped the city's recent history.

The ride takes 5 to 8 hours depending on pace and trail choice. You start at the Torus Tours office in central Sarajevo, and a guide leads the group in English, Croatian or Serbian. Lunch happens at the mountain top, and the tour supplies the bike, helmet and backpack. Children are welcome from age 14 onward, though the operator notes this is not suitable for anyone with spinal injuries or cardiovascular concerns, and a moderate fitness level makes the day manageable.

What’s included

  • Bike, helmet and backpack for the ride.
