The experience

The route traces Herzegovina's layered history through four centuries of conquest and survival. You start from your Sarajevo hotel and travel south through Konjic before reaching Pocitelj, a fortified town built into a hillside during the Ottoman period, where narrow stone streets and a mosque tower overlook the valley. The drive then follows the Neretva River, known for its distinctive turquoise-green water, as it cuts through a canyon lined with limestone cliffs. This stretch alone justifies the journey. The river's color comes from glacial minerals upstream, and the canyon walls rise sheer on both sides.

Mostar is the centerpiece. The Old Town clusters around the Stari Most, the arched stone bridge that has stood since 1566 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Your guide leads a walking tour through the bazaar, past the mosque and the old hammam, pointing out how the architecture shifts between Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and modern reconstruction: the building damage from the 1990s war is still visible on some facades, a reminder of what the city endured. You have time to walk the bridge itself and look down at the Neretva below.

The final stop is Blagaj Tekke, a dervish lodge built into a cliff face where a freshwater spring emerges from the rock. The lodge sits at the mouth of a cave, and the spring feeds directly into the river. It's one of the most photographed spots in Herzegovina, but the guide's context (the role of the tekke in Ottoman spiritual life, the way the spring never runs dry) makes the visit more than a photo stop. You return to Sarajevo by evening after a full 12 hours on the road.
