Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Mostar war history and sites

  • Visit hidden Yugoslavian military base
  • Tour Mostar War Museum with guide
  • Walk along West Front Line in city

The experience

The tour opens at an abandoned Yugoslav military hangar five minutes south of Mostar, where Josip Broz Tito's regime kept fighter jets hidden deep in the mountains. From there you move into the city itself: the Mostar War Museum, where your guide walks you through what the siege meant for people living here, and then to Šantića Street and the West Front Line, where Bosnian and Croatian forces fought closest to the city center. The guide brings pictures taken during the war so you can see each location as it was thirty years ago and compare it to what stands there now.

Your guide lived through the shelling and the enclave that formed when the city was divided. Rather than narrate from a distance, they share what it was like to survive constant bombardment and what happened in the concentration camps. The tour uses a map drawn on a board to explain how Yugoslavia fractured in the 1980s and why Mostar became so strategically important, and why it ended up as one of the most destroyed cities in Bosnia. You'll see bunkers that still stand in the city center, practical reminders of how close the fighting came.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, along with transport in an air-conditioned vehicle. The walking is moderate and the pace suits all fitness levels. Children from age 3 can join if accompanied by an adult.

Is this one for you?The tour moves at a walking pace through the city center and involves moderate walking on flat ground, so it suits anyone comfortable on their feet for a couple of hours. The content is historical and direct (not graphic, but unflinching about what happened), and works for travelers who want to understand the conflict and its lasting mark on the city.

What exactly happened to Mostar during the war in the 1990s?

Mostar was strategically important because of its position, and when Bosnia fractured during the Yugoslav breakup, the city was divided between Bosnian and Croatian forces. The shelling was constant, and the city became one of the most heavily destroyed in Bosnia. Your guide explains why the conflict happened and what daily life was like under siege.

Will I see the actual front line where the fighting took place?

Yes. Šantića Street and the West Front Line are the final stop on the tour. You'll walk through the city center to see bunkers that still stand and the invisible line that still divides Mostar's two parts. The guide shows photographs from the war so you can see how those same streets looked during the conflict.

Does the guide speak from personal experience?

Your guide lived through the siege and shares firsthand stories about shelling, concentration camps, and survival. They also draw a map of the former Yugoslavia to help explain how the country broke apart and why the war started.

How long does the tour take, and what's included in the price?

The tour runs 2.5 hours and includes hotel pickup and drop-off, transport in an air-conditioned vehicle, and a professional English-speaking guide. You'll visit three stops: the abandoned military hangar, the War Museum, and the front line in the city center.
