The experience
The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Sarajevo's Old Town and heads east into the Kazani gorges before reaching Foča. The Sand Pyramids (rare geological formations over 200 years old) grow taller each day as erosion eats away at their base, a phenomenon unlike the better-known pyramids in Colorado or the Dolomites. Unlike those established attractions, these remain largely undiscovered. You'll walk through Foča itself to see the Aladža Mosque, one of the three most important mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina, rebuilt between 2016 and 2018 after its destruction in 1992. The mosque sits on the banks where two rivers meet, flowing through three national parks.
The route then follows the Drina river to Goražde, an industrial city that, like Sarajevo, endured a prolonged siege during the Bosnian War. You'll visit the bridge built under a bridge, a corridor constructed during the siege, and learn about the Drina Martyrs, the soldiers who held the city's frontlines for four years. The guide shares the story of how Goražde's people resisted, turning the city's wartime positions into a living history lesson. This is not a museum tour. You're standing in the places where that resistance happened.
The journey back to Sarajevo takes the same route, arriving at the Old Town office by late afternoon. Transport is in an air-conditioned vehicle, and the guide speaks English throughout. All fees and taxes are included in the price.

What exactly are the Sand Pyramids of Foča?
The Sand Pyramids are rare geological formations made entirely of sand, over 200 years old, found near Foča in Eastern Bosnia. Unlike similar pyramids elsewhere in Europe and North America, these grow taller over time as erosion eats away at their base, making them unique in how they evolve.
Will I learn about Goražde's role in the Bosnian War?

Is the Aladža Mosque still standing after 1992?
The Aladža Mosque was destroyed in 1992 but has been fully reconstructed. The work was completed between 2016 and 2018. It remains one of the three most architecturally important mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina and is considered one of the most significant in the European part of the former Ottoman Empire.
How does pickup work if I'm staying outside the Old Town?
