The experience
A private transfer picks you up at your La Paz hotel at 7am and takes you to El Alto International Airport for a 45-minute flight to Uyuni. When you land, your English-speaking guide and driver meet you, and you start with an American buffet breakfast at a local café. At 10am you explore the Train Cemetery, an open-air museum of decommissioned locomotives, then continue to Colchani to watch salt processors at work before entering the Uyuni Salt Flats itself.
The day centers on three stops. Incahuasi Island sits in the middle of the salt expanse, ringed by giant cacti and dramatic rock formations. You walk the island and eat lunch there. At 2:30pm you head to the base of Tunupa Volcano to observe the Andean landscape and watch for flamencos, llamas and vicuñas. The guide shares what the region holds and how it formed. As the sun drops, you return to the salt flats for a champagne toast and warm drinks while the light turns the horizon surreal colors: the salt itself reflects the sky and makes the horizon disappear.
You stay overnight at Hotel Atipax in Uyuni, then return to the airport the next morning for the 45-minute flight back to La Paz and a drop-off at your hotel. The tour runs with a maximum of four travelers in one vehicle, so the pace stays unhurried and the guide can tailor stops to the group's interests. A professional driver handles the 4x4 Land Cruiser on salt and rough terrain. Vegetarian meals are available if you request them when booking.

The overnight stay means you catch both the morning light on the salt flats and the sunset, rather than rushing back to La Paz the same day.
