The experience

We rumbled out of Uyuni in a dusty 4x4 just after breakfast, windows down because the air was dry but not cold. Our guide, Carla, pointed ahead as we bumped along. “That’s the Train Cemetery,” she said, and I could already see old iron shapes against the pale horizon. Walking between rusted locomotives from another era felt strange. They’re huge up close, and you can almost smell the metal and salt mixing in the wind. Some kids were climbing on top for photos.
