The Experience

We rumbled out of Uyuni in a dusty 4x4 just after breakfast, windows down because the air was dry but not cold. Our guide, Carla, pointed ahead as we bumped along — “That’s the Train Cemetery,” she said, and I could already see old iron shapes against the pale horizon. Walking between rusted locomotives from another era felt strange — they’re huge up close, and you can almost smell the metal and salt mixing in the wind. Some kids were climbing on top for photos; I just touched one wheel and my hand came away gritty.

After that we stopped in Colchani — it’s a tiny place but busy with locals selling little carved llamas made of salt. Carla introduced us to a woman shaping blocks by hand (her name was Lucia), and I tried to say thank you in Spanish but probably got it wrong. The air here tastes salty, honestly. We watched them cut blocks from the ground; it’s harder work than it looks. Lunch was simple but filling — quinoa soup and something called piqueo — and I liked that they asked about food preferences before we left town.

Then came the real Salar de Uyuni. It’s hard to describe what it feels like stepping onto that endless white — especially during rainy season when everything turns into a mirror. You can see clouds under your feet. Carla showed us where the water bubbles up through little holes (“ojos de agua”), which looked almost alive. We took those silly perspective photos everyone does (I’m still laughing at mine), but then there was this quiet moment — just standing there with nothing but sky above and below, no sound except a little wind.

The last stop was sunset on the flats. Colors changed so fast — pinks turning gold on the water’s surface, our group mostly silent except for someone opening a bottle of wine (included, which felt fancy out here). I didn’t expect to feel so small or so calm at once. We drove back in near-darkness, headlights bouncing off wet salt, everyone tired but happy in that way you only get after seeing something you can’t really explain later.

What’s included

Your day includes pickup in Uyuni city, all transport by 4x4 vehicle with an English- and Spanish-speaking guide, entrance fees where needed, a traditional Bolivian lunch tailored to dietary needs if requested ahead of time, snacks (“piqueo”), bottled water and wine for sunset before returning in the evening.
