The experience

You arrive at La Paz airport and transfer to the Hotel Rosario for an afternoon city tour. Your guide takes you through Plaza Murillo, the Presidential Palace, and San Francisco Church, then out to the Valley of the Moon before sunset. The next morning at 8 a.m., you leave for Copacabana on Lake Titicaca, traveling by private vehicle and then by reed boat to see the Aymara communities and visit the islands of the Sun and Moon. After lunch, you drive back to La Paz, fly to Uyuni, and check into the 4-star Hotel Casa de Sal on the edge of the salt flat.

Day three is the salt flat itself. You start at the train cemetery to see Bolivia's first locomotives, then move through the manual salt-harvesting operations in Colchani before entering the Uyuni Salt Flats. Incahuasi Island, ringed with giant cacti, is where you eat lunch and take in the landscape. You visit Tunupa Volcano to watch flamingos, then return to Uyuni for sunset over the flats before flying back to La Paz and settling into the Hotel Gloria. On your final morning, you drive to Tiwanaku to walk the Puerta del Sol and Puma Punku ruins and tour the on-site museum, then head to the airport by 2 p.m.

The tour is private, so only your group travels together. Your guide speaks English and handles all navigation, meal arrangements, and transfers between hotels and attractions. Flights between La Paz and Uyuni, three nights of accommodation, and all meals according to the itinerary are included.

Is this one for you?Four days is tight enough to move through three regions without backtracking, but long enough to spend a full day in the salt flats and see both Lake Titicaca and Tiwanaku. If you have a week or more, a longer tour adds the Atacama Desert or more time in each region. If you have only two days, you'll have to choose between the salt flats and the lake.
