The experience
The climb splits into three days so your body can adjust to the altitude. You leave La Paz and drive to Laguna Zongo (4,730m), where you unpack at the Puma Condor refuge and spend the afternoon on a short glacier hike learning to use crampons and an ice axe: the only technical skills the normal route demands. That night you sleep at base camp. Day two is a steady 2–3 hour walk uphill to the Mountaineer's House (5,130m), where an early rest prepares you for the summit push.
The summit attempt starts at 1am. You climb slowly and steadily for 5–6 hours, moving across the glacier in darkness until you reach 6,088m as the light breaks. The views from the top span Lake Titicaca, the high plateau and the peaks of the Cordillera Real. You descend the same route back to high camp, pack your gear and walk down to base camp, where a car is waiting to drive you back to La Paz the same day.
All mountain equipment comes with you: helmet, ice axe, harness, gaiters, ropes and mountaineering boots. Meals are provided at each camp. Your guide speaks English or Spanish and leads the whole climb. You'll need to bring your own sleeping bag, thermal underwear, waterproof jacket and pants, sunscreen and sunglasses. The operator does not supply these.
