The Experience

The crew at the Hamilton pier knew exactly what they were doing when they asked if I'd done this before — not in a sales way, just checking. They were already rigging the Rising Son II as we arrived, and within minutes we were moving away from the dock into the Great Sound. The boat's got trampolines stretched across the hulls, a shaded cockpit if the sun gets too much, and an upper deck where you can actually see what's coming. For the first hour, that's mostly water and sky, with someone from the crew talking through what you're passing — not a script, just conversation about the reefs and the islands and how the light changes depending on where you are.

Then you anchor at a secluded spot and the real choice starts. The crew sets out snorkeling gear, a couple of kayaks, and a stand-up paddleboard, and you pick what you want to do for the next hour and a half. Some people swim straight to a nearby sandbar. Others take a kayak out and poke around the shallows. If you've never tried SUP, the crew will get you steady on it. The snorkeling happens around a reef that's close enough that you don't have to paddle far — the gear is there, it fits, and the crew knows which direction the fish are. It's not a guided snorkel tour; it's more like they've opened the water to you and you go explore it.

When you climb back aboard, there's a complimentary rum swizzle waiting, and the bar's got drink specials if you want something else. The sail back to Hamilton takes another hour, and by then the sun's lower and the whole thing has that end-of-day feeling — island music playing, people quiet on the trampolines, the kind of tired that means you actually did something. You're back at the pier before evening, which leaves the rest of your day open.
