The experience

The tour starts with pickup at 8:30am from your hotel or cruise liner in Belize City, then a 90-minute drive west to the trailhead. Your English-speaking guide leads you on foot through the jungle and into Saint Herman's Cave, where you see the stalagmites and crystal formations that fill the cave system. The walk is moderate (you'll need at least a moderate level of fitness), and the cave itself stays cool even in the heat.

After the cave, you hike to the Blue Hole, a natural sinkhole formed by a collapsed cave system about 30 feet deep. The water is the blue the name promises. You swim here while your guide stays with the group. Drinking water, snacks, and all the gear you need for cave hiking are provided. The drive back to Belize City takes another 90 minutes, and you're dropped at your hotel or cruise terminal by late afternoon.

In the rainy season (June to November), heavy rain can flood the cave. If that happens, your guide will offer an alternate tour instead. Wear a T-shirt, shorts, and water shoes or tennis shoes that can get wet. Lunch is available to purchase if you want it, but it's not included in the tour price.
