The Experience

"Are those actually sharks?" The question comes up the moment the boat slows near Silk Caye and the water clears to pale turquoise. Yes — nurse sharks, the kind that glide past without interest, more curious than aggressive. You're in the water within minutes of arrival, mask on, the reef dropping away beneath you. Sea turtles move through the shallows like they own the place, which they do. Stingrays flatten themselves against the sand below, their wings rippling.
