The Experience
The boat leaves Splash Dive Center at 9am for a 30 to 40 minute ride out to the caye. When you arrive, the park ranger gives a briefing before you enter the water with your guide. If you've never snorkeled, the guides walk you through the basics — how to breathe, how to position yourself, where to look. The reef has two sides, each with different marine life. On the east, coral mounds separated by sand rise about 5 feet from the surface and hold lobsters, barracuda, lizardfish, angel fish, parrot fish and spotted drums. The west side is where you find Nassau grouper, furry sea cucumbers, conch and dense schools of juvenile reef fish.
Around midday you come back to the island for a Belize-style picnic lunch or barbecue, plus coffee, tea, bottled water and snacks. Then you head back into the water for a second session before the boat returns to Placencia. The whole day runs about six hours from start to finish. Towels and all snorkel equipment — mask, fins, snorkel — are provided; you bring nothing but yourself and a willingness to get wet.
