The Experience

The coach pulls out of Brussels heading toward the Saints-Michel-et-Gudule Cathedral, an eleventh-century church rebuilt in Brabant Gothic style that echoes Notre-Dame of Paris. From there, your guide walks you through three key districts of the city—the Grand Place, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1998 and was rebuilt in just four years after the devastating 1695 fire; the Royal Palace district with its ancient park; and the Sablon neighborhood, where the fifteenth-century Church of Notre-Dame des Victoires stands as the last Gothic-style church built in Brussels. You'll stop at Manneken Pis, the 61-centimeter bronze sculpture that's somehow become one of the city's most recognized landmarks, and pass the Palace of Justice, a Greco-Roman building that took thirty years to construct and offers a panoramic view of the city from its height.

After a scenic coach ride to Antwerp, the day opens up. You get free time for lunch and personal exploration—enough to wander into the Cathedral of Our Lady, where four major Rubens paintings hang: "The Raising of the Cross," "The Resurrection of Christ," "The Descent from the Cross," and "The Assumption of the Virgin." The cathedral itself is the largest Gothic church in the Netherlands, with construction that began in 1352 and took nearly 170 years to complete. The north tower reaches 123 meters. Het Steen fortress sits along the old city fortifications, and the Grote Markt is ringed by seventeenth-century guildhouses. If you want to see more, the Antwerp Central Station—built in 1905 and ranked the fourth most beautiful railway station in the world in 2009—is nearby, as is Museum aan de Stroom, the largest museum in Antwerp, opened in 2011 along the Scheldt River.

The day ends with a photo stop at the Atomium, the symbol of the 1958 World's Fair. It's an iron crystal enlarged 165 billion times, consisting of nine spherical atoms, and inside is the history of that fair. The coach returns you at the end of the afternoon with a multilingual guide who's been with you the whole time, and the air-conditioned vehicle means you're not managing the heat or the logistics of getting between two cities on your own.
