The experience

First thing I noticed was the wind, not gentle, but salty and loud, pushing at us as we stepped out near Ragged Point Lighthouse. Our guide, Michael, grinned and pointed out the way the sea crashed against the cliffs below. I could smell wet limestone and something sharp in the air, maybe seaweed? There were a few fishermen down by the rocks already, their voices carrying up even over the wind. It felt like waking up somewhere raw and honest.

The path along the old railway line surprised me. I’d pictured an easy stroll but it’s rougher than that, cut right through coral stone in places. Michael stopped to show us how the rock breaks off in layers. He handed me a piece and it left white dust on my fingers. We passed a cluster of houses painted bright blue and yellow. A woman waved from her porch, laughing when I tried to say “good morning” in Bajan dialect (I definitely didn’t get it right). The day trip from Bridgetown to this side of Barbados felt like stepping into another world.

Conset Cutting was cooler, shaded by trees tangled overhead. The ground underfoot was gritty and uneven. Michael told stories about the old trains that used to run here. I tried to picture them rattling past where we were walking now. When we reached Conset Bay fishing village, kids were playing with kites made from plastic bags. Someone was frying fish nearby. You could smell oil and pepper drifting through everything else. After all that climbing, sitting with a cold Coke (or rum punch if you wanted) felt pretty much perfect.
