Step-by-step itinerary

Guided bird watching around Barbados

  • Start trek at southeast corner
  • Explore Chancery Lane Swamp
  • Visit Woodbourne Shorebird Reserve
  • Stop at private sanctuary in St. Philip

The experience

If you have a free morning in Barbados and want to see the island beyond the beaches, this tour starts on the southeast coast where Ruddy Turnstones and other shorebirds work the shoreline. You'll also catch the sight of kitesurfers overhead. From there the guide takes you inland to Chancery Lane Swamp, a seasonal wetland where Herons and Egrets nest in the reeds and the occasional Osprey circles above. The swamp sits on land once inhabited by the Amerindians, so the setting carries both wildlife and cultural history.

The core of the tour is Woodbourne Shorebird Reserve, a stopover point for migratory birds crossing the hemisphere. Depending on the season, you may see Great Blue Herons in the shallows, Kingfishers diving for prey, or flocks of Snowy Egrets, Whistling Ducks and Sandpipers feeding together: a rare chance to watch these travelers pause to refuel before continuing their long journeys. Your final stop is a private sanctuary in St. Philip parish, where Snowy Egrets, Gallinules and Tricoloured Herons share the wetlands with Plovers and Pectoral Sandpipers.

You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with binoculars and a field reference guide provided. The tour runs about two and a half hours and includes bottled water, soda and alcoholic beverages. A local guide leads in English and handles all transport from your hotel or meeting point.

Is this one for you?The tour moves at a steady pace with moderate walking through wetlands and reserves, so come with comfortable shoes and a moderate fitness level. The timing (a morning of about two and a half hours) fits easily into a day with other plans, and the guide's knowledge of where birds congregate by season means your sightings depend less on luck than on knowing where to look.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What birds can I expect to see on this tour in Barbados?

Resident species include Great Blue Herons, Egrets, Kingfishers, Osprey and Gallinules. Migratory birds depend on the season but often include Snowy Egrets, Whistling Ducks, Sandpipers, Plovers and Pectoral Sandpipers passing through on their journeys across the hemisphere.

What is Chancery Lane Swamp and why does the tour stop there?

Chancery Lane Swamp is a seasonal wetland on land once inhabited by the Amerindians, making it significant both for wildlife and cultural history. Herons and Egrets nest in the reeds, and the occasional Osprey circles above, so it's a productive spot for bird watching.

What does Woodbourne Shorebird Reserve offer that makes it worth a stop?

Woodbourne is a sanctuary for migratory species, so you're watching birds that are actively traveling across the hemisphere. It's a rare opportunity to see multiple species (Great Blue Herons, Kingfishers, Snowy Egrets, Whistling Ducks and Sandpipers) feeding together as they pause to refuel before continuing their journeys.
