The experience
Sonargaon sits 30 km from Dhaka and holds what remains of Bengal's 15th-century seat of power. The Goaldi Mosque, built in 1519 under Sultan Hussain Shah, stands as the most intact monument from that era: a single-domed structure that shows the ornate pre-Mughal style that came before the Mughals reshaped the region's architecture. Panam City sprawls across the site, its colonial and Sultanate-era buildings still standing but crumbling, a ghost of the trading hub that once marked the end of the Grand Trunk Road for merchants traveling 2,500 kilometers from the Hindu Kush.
The Jamdani weaving villages are where the tour's real work happens. These artisans hand-loom the same muslin fabric that made Dhaka famous across the world: a process so labor-intensive that each supplementary weft motif is added by hand using individual spools of thread and fine bamboo sticks. The pattern sits underneath the warp on graph paper. The weaver never sketches it. What emerges is a shimmering cotton cloth with intricate patterns that seem to float on the surface. You watch this happen at the loom, not in a museum.
The Folk Art and Craft Museum occupies the Sardar Bari, a 1901 mansion built by a Hindu Zamindar with baroque plasterwork and European palace styling. The collection includes pieces lost from the country elsewhere, held only here. The museum closes Wednesdays and Thursdays and operates 9 AM to 5 PM on other days. A boat trip on the Megha River rounds out the day, letting you see village life along the water before the return to Dhaka.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Hindi and Bangla.
What exactly is Jamdani fabric and why is it so hard to make?
Jamdani is a hand-loom muslin woven in cotton with decorative motifs added by supplementary weft: thicker threads that create intricate patterns on top of the fine base weave. Each motif is threaded by hand using individual spools and bamboo sticks, following a graph-paper pattern placed under the warp, making it one of the most time and labor-intensive textiles in the world.
How old is the Goaldi Mosque and what makes it different from other mosques in Bangladesh?
The Goaldi Mosque was built in 1519 during the reign of Sultan Hussain Shah, making it one of the few surviving monuments from Sonargaon's Sultanate period. Its single dome and pre-Mughal design are more elegant and ornate than earlier Sultanate mosques, and it stands as the most impressive extant building from the old capital.
What is Panam City and why is it abandoned?
Panam City was a major trading and political center during the 15th-century reign of Isa Khan and once covered 20 km of Sonargaon. Its colonial and Sultanate-era buildings still stand but remain largely unoccupied, threatened by flooding, vandalism and unauthorized development, making it a haunting remnant of Bengal's medieval prosperity.
Does the tour include lunch?
Lunch is not included in the tour, so you can arrange your own meal or purchase food during the day.
How long does the tour take and what time does it start?
The tour runs 6 to 8 hours total and includes hotel pickup from Dhaka, so the start time depends on where you're staying and the guide's pickup schedule.
Can I visit the Folk Art Museum on any day?
The Folk Art and Craft Museum is open 9 AM to 5 PM but closes on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so plan accordingly depending on which day your tour is scheduled.
