The experience
The tour leaves Dhaka City in an air-conditioned vehicle and takes roughly 90 minutes to reach Sonargaon. Your first stop is Goaldi Mosque, built in 1519 during the reign of Sultan Hussain Shah: one of Bangladesh's oldest mosques, where you'll have a tea break and hear the history of the Mughal period. From there you move to Boro Sardar Bari, an Indo-European mansion built in 1901 by a wealthy merchant family, now part of the Sonargaon Folk Arts and Crafts Museum. Its grand columns and arched windows show the prosperity of Bengal's trading era.
Next is the main museum building, a former palace of King Isa Kha, where you walk the campus to explore how the ancient capital was laid out. Then you head to Panam City, built around 1500 as a business hub for wealthy Hindu merchants: a single road divides the area, lined with colonial-era buildings that show the architectural shift from Mughal to British influence. Lunch at a nearby restaurant with local food is included in some options. Let the operator know if you need special dietary requests. After eating, there's a rest period under trees before the final leg.
The tour ends with a boat ride on the Meghna River, one of Bangladesh's three major rivers and the waterway that borders Sonargaon itself. The whole day runs seven hours from pickup to return. Snacks are provided throughout, and the guide speaks English and walks you through each site's history and cultural significance.
