The experience
Start in Dhaka with a historian guide who walks you through the city's layered past. You'll see the Dhakeshwari Temple, built in the 12th century and now Bangladesh's national Hindu shrine; Lalbagh Fort, a Mughal structure from 1678 left unfinished and still holding that sense of mystery; the Star Mosque with its white marble and engraved star patterns; and the Armenian Church, a remnant of the 17th-century Armenian trading community. A rowboat ride on the Buriganga at Sadarghat Port puts you among the thousands of ferries and cargo boats that move through one of the world's busiest river ports, where you'll see the working life of the river up close.
Day two takes you to Sonargaon, the medieval capital of Bengal before Dhaka took over in 1610. The royal palace and Folk Arts Museum show everyday objects, ornaments, boats and musical instruments from Bengal's heritage going back to the 17th century. Panam Nagar, an abandoned city built by Hindu merchants, stands as the most striking sight: a ghost town frozen in time. Then you return to Dhaka for the night.
Days three through five shift to Srimangal, known as the tea capital. A bus or train carries you there (6 to 7 hours depending on traffic, your guide arranges the ticket and meets you at the station). A full day in the tea country means trekking through Lawachara tropical rainforest looking for Hulluck gibbons, spectacle leaf monkeys and rare dusky leaf monkeys, then hiking through Khasi tribal villages and walking among tea gardens, rubber plantations, lemon orchards and pineapple fields. You'll taste the famous seven-layer tea. Cycling through village streets is optional if you ask your guide. Accommodation is in a small hotel or, when available, a homestay with a local family. The final day, a return bus or train brings you back to Dhaka by late afternoon or evening.

Is this one for you? This tour suits travelers arriving in Dhaka for the first time who want to move beyond the city itself. The five-day length gives you time to see Dhaka's heritage sites without rushing, then spend three full days in the tea country trekking and walking through villages: a pace that works for all fitness levels but does involve walking on narrow streets and forest trails.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Dhakeshwari Temple and why does it matter to Dhaka?
The Dhakeshwari Temple is Bangladesh's national Hindu temple, built in the 12th century during the Sena Dynasty by King Ballal Sen. Many scholars believe the city of Dhaka was named after this temple. It holds status as the most important Hindu place of worship in the country and is considered part of Dhaka's essential cultural heritage.
Will I see wildlife in the Lawachara rainforest?
Lawachara rainforest is home to Hulluck gibbons, spectacle leaf monkeys and rare dusky leaf monkeys, along with a range of bird species and unusual trees. Your guide will trek with you through the forest in search of these animals, though sightings depend on the day and season.
How does the transfer between Dhaka and Srimangal work?
Your guide provides a bus or train ticket (train availability is limited). You take a tuk-tuk to the terminal or station in the morning, travel alone for 6 to 7 hours, and your Srimangal guide meets you at your arrival point to transfer you to your hotel. The return journey follows the same pattern on day five.
What is Sonargaon and what will I see there?
Sonargaon was the capital of Bengal from the 13th century until 1610, when the Mughal rulers moved the capital to Dhaka. Today it is a quiet village with few remaining traces of its former glory. You'll visit the Goaldi Mosque from 1519, the abandoned merchant city of Panam Nagar, and the Folk Arts Museum displaying heritage artifacts from the 17th century onward.
Can I cycle through the villages in Srimangal?
Cycling through the narrow streets and villages around Srimangal is available as an optional activity. Ask your guide on the day if you'd like to arrange it.
