The experience
Day one starts at Baitul Mukarram Mosque, completed in 1968 with a capacity of 30,000: the 10th largest mosque in the world. From there you move to the Sadarghat riverfront for a one-hour boat ride on the Buriganga, then head to Ahsan Manzil, the 18th-century Pink Palace on the river's bank in Old Dhaka. The itinerary continues through Star Mosque, decorated with blue star motifs and built in the first half of the 19th century, and Armenian Church, a 17th-century monument in Armanitola that marks the region's historical Armenian community. Lalbagh Fort, an incomplete 17th-century Mughal fortress begun by Prince Muhammad Azam, comes next, with its tomb of Pari Bibi, mosque, and audience hall. The day ends at Dhakeshwari Temple, Bangladesh's national Hindu temple and the most important Hindu place of worship in the country since 1971. You'll also see Shahid Minar and Curzon Hall, where the Bengali Language Movement began. An overnight stay in a 3-star hotel is included.
Day two takes you to Sonargaon, starting with Banglar Tajmahal, a scaled replica of the Mughal mausoleum in Agra. Goaldi Mosque, built in 1519, stands as one of the few surviving medieval monuments of the old capital and shows pre-Mughal architecture. Panam Nagar follows: a unique township stretched along a single 600-meter street with 52 dilapidated houses that once formed a bustling bazaar. After lunch at a local restaurant, you board a wooden engine-driven boat for a cruise on the Meghna River, Bangladesh's widest river. You'll watch local fishermen catch Hilsa fish and stop at Nunertek Island to see the daily life and activities of remote village communities accessible only by water. The tour returns to Dhaka around 6 pm.
Your guide speaks English throughout both days, and transport is by air-conditioned private car. The boat charges on both rivers and the Sadarghat boat ride are included in the price. Lalbagh Fort closes Sundays and Mondays, and the Folk Art Museum closes Wednesdays and Thursdays, so the itinerary adjusts accordingly. Ahsan Manzil is also closed Thursdays.
