The experience
Bahrain Fort sits atop a 17.5-hectare artificial hill built over 4,000 years of continuous occupation. The site is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds the ruins of the former Dilmun capital: residential, public, commercial and military structures that archaeologists have been excavating for fifty years. Your guide walks you through what those layers reveal about the island's trading importance across centuries.
From there, the tour moves to Al Fateh Grand Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, built in 1987 under the patronage of Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa. The scale of the interior and the craftsmanship are the draw here. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome to enter and observe. Then you head into Manama Souq through Bab Al Bahrain, the restored 1949 gateway that once housed government offices and now serves as the entrance to the market. The souq is where you get a sense of daily Bahrain: the vendors, the goods, the rhythm of the place.
You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water and onboard WiFi. Pickup is from your hotel, the airport or the cruise terminal, depending on where you're staying or arriving. The tour runs between one and four hours depending on how much time you spend at each stop and what you want to explore in the souq.
