The experience

Qobustan sits 60 km south of Baku and holds the archaeological heart of the tour. The reserve contains more than 6,000 rock engravings carved into stone between 5,000 and 40,000 years ago, along with the remains of inhabited caves, settlements and burials left by people who lived through the wet climate after the last Ice Age. The Qobustan National Museum helps frame what you're seeing in the rock art and the landscape itself.

From there, the tour shifts gear, literally. The road to the mud volcanoes is rough enough that you switch from your regular vehicle to a Soviet-era Lada, turning the drive into its own adventure. Mud volcanoes are rare worldwide, and Azerbaijan has them in abundance near Qobustan. You'll see these geological oddities before heading to lunch, a local cuisine buffet served near Ateshgah Fire Temple.

Ateshgah Fire Temple is one of Azerbaijan's most striking historical sites. According to local records, people worshipped here before the 17th century because of seven holes in the rock that continuously burn with natural flame. The temple itself reflects that sacred fire tradition. From there, the tour ends at Yanar Dag on the Absheron Peninsula near the Caspian Sea. This natural gas fire burns year-round on a hillside, with flames shooting 3 metres into the air from a thin layer of porous sandstone. A sight that has earned Azerbaijan its nickname, the Land of Fire.

What are the rock engravings at Qobustan and how old are they?

Qobustan holds over 6,000 rock engravings carved between 5,000 and 40,000 years ago, created by people who lived in the area during the wet period after the last Ice Age. The engravings, along with remains of caves, settlements and burials, show how intensively the land was used by early inhabitants.

Why do you switch to a Lada car on this tour?

The road to the mud volcanoes is too rough for a standard vehicle, so the tour changes to Soviet Lada cars to handle the terrain. It's part of the experience and adds an adventure element to reaching these rare geological formations.

What is Yanar Dag and how does it work?

Yanar Dag is a natural gas fire that burns continuously on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula. Flames jet 3 metres into the air from a thin, porous sandstone layer where the gas escapes and ignites, creating a permanent fire visible day and night.

Lunch is a local cuisine buffet served near Ateshgah Fire Temple and is included in the tour price.

How far is Qobustan from Baku, and how long does the full tour take?
