The Experience

“You see that golden shimmer?” our guide, Anna, asked as we squinted up at the Upper Belvedere’s facade. It was still early, so the light hit everything sideways—made the statues look almost alive. The colors are softer than I thought they’d be; not flashy at all. Someone behind me sighed really quietly. Maybe that sounds silly but it stuck with me.

Our group was tiny—just six people—so it felt more like tagging along with friends than being herded around. At one point I tried to pronounce “Belvedere” in German and got it wrong; Anna laughed and said most Viennese just say “Schloss.” I still think about that view from the terrace—Vienna kind of sprawled out below, rooftops catching light in weird angles.
