- Explore imperial metro station
The experience
The tour opens at the Otto Wagner Pavilion at Karlsplatz, where your guide establishes the foundation of Jugendstil design before walking you to Stadtpark station. This is the best preserved of the original metro stations still in use, and here the guide unpacks the design elements that define the style, including the artificial riverbed constructed for the Vienna river when the city train was built, a major engineering decision that shaped how the station integrates into the urban landscape.
From Stadtpark, you move to Kettenbrücke station, stopping along the way to visit the Secession art building, the icon of Viennese Jugendstil, and two apartment houses by Wagner. The guide walks you through the philosophy behind the movement, the symbols and materials its practitioners favored, and how these choices appear across the buildings you see. Then you step onto the metro for the final stop: the imperial station outside Schönbrunn castle, built solely for the Emperor's use. This small but dynamic building brings together every design element encountered throughout the walk, while also showing how Wagner adapted the generally bourgeois aesthetic of Art Nouveau into something with imperial authority.
The tour runs 2.5 hours with a maximum of eight people per booking, keeping the group small enough for detailed conversation. Your guide speaks English and leads the walk at a pace suitable for all fitness levels. Note that from April to October, when the museum is open, the tour includes entry to the Otto Wagner Pavilion (€9.50 adults, €6 students and seniors). If you tour Tuesday to Sunday, entry to the Secession House is also included (€9.50 adults, €6 students and seniors).

Top questions
What is the Secession art building and why does the tour stop there?
The Secession art building is the icon par excellence of Viennese Jugendstil, the Austrian version of Art Nouveau. The tour visits it to show you the symbols, materials and design philosophy that define the movement, and to connect those principles to the metro stations and apartment houses you see throughout the walk.
Does the tour include entry to the Otto Wagner Pavilion and the Secession House?
Entry to the Otto Wagner Pavilion is included from April to October when the museum is open. If you tour Tuesday to Sunday, entry to the Secession House is also included. Outside those windows, these fees are not part of the tour.
How does the imperial station differ from the other metro stations on the tour?
The imperial station was built outside Schönbrunn castle solely for the Emperor to use, giving it symbolic weight as a statement of imperial support for Vienna's metro line. It is smaller and more dynamic than the other stations, and it brings together all the design elements encountered throughout the walk while translating them into imperial grandeur rather than the bourgeois aesthetic of standard Art Nouveau.
What is the artificial riverbed at Stadtpark station, and why was it built?
When Vienna's city train was constructed, the Vienna river needed to be rechanneled. The artificial riverbed at Stadtpark station was built to integrate the realigned river into the new urban landscape, solving a major engineering challenge while becoming a remarkable design feature of the station itself.
How many people are on each tour, and what is the pace like?
Tours are limited to a maximum of eight people per booking, keeping the group small for detailed discussion. The pace is suitable for all physical fitness levels, so the walk is accessible whether you are very active or prefer a gentler speed.
