The experience
The tour starts in front of the Rathaus, Vienna's massive Neo-Gothic city hall, where your guide meets you to begin the walking portion. You'll pass the Burgtheater and move through the Old Town's grand streets, seeing the Column of Pest, the Baroque St. Peter's Church, and the stunning St. Stephen's Cathedral, where you can walk inside for free, though only silent sightseeing is allowed. The walking route changes depending on which option you choose: the 3-hour 15-minute version covers the core highlights, while the 4-hour 15-minute extended tour adds the Wiener Minoritenkirche, a 13th-century Gothic church with a distinctive roof, and the Hofburg Palace, the Baroque Habsburg complex that once housed the imperial court.
After the walking portion, your guide takes you to the Danube Canal, where you board a comfortable boat for a 1-hour 15-minute sightseeing cruise. Your guide won't join the boat (they'll give you the tickets and brief you on what you'll see from the water), but the live commentary on board walks you through the architecture as you pass Media Tower, the Urania observatory, Badeschiff, Ringturm, Roßauer barracks, Zaha-Hadid-Haus and Schützenhaus. The Danube is Europe's second-longest river and carries the history of Vienna and Austria in its course. Seeing it from the water gives a different angle on the city's scale and layout.
Your guide speaks one of eleven languages fluently and holds an official Vienna license. Bring warm clothes (the water is colder than the streets), and check your email the day before for any last-minute details. The tour is wheelchair accessible throughout, and infants can sit on an adult's lap or ride in a stroller.
