The experience
I nearly tripped on my own excitement (and the steps, there are a lot) when we finally reached The Lounge at Sydney Opera House. I’d always seen those white sails from afar but standing underneath them, waiting for our guide to appear, felt different: like being backstage at some enormous secret. Our guide, Tom, greeted us with a grin that said he’d done this a thousand times but still loved it. He pointed out tiny details in the tiles I’d never noticed in photos. They’re not really white up close, more like eggshell and cream, and you can feel the ocean breeze sneaking through the cracks. It smelled faintly of salt and something sweet from one of the restaurants below.
The tour itself was just an hour but somehow packed with stories: about architects arguing over acoustics, about performers who got lost in the labyrinth of corridors (I would too). We peeked into empty theaters where you could almost hear last night’s applause echoing around. At one point Tom stopped us by a window overlooking Circular Quay just as a ferry horn sounded.
