The Experience

The tour leaves Perth at 5:30 am on day one and moves southeast through the wheatbelt toward Fitzgerald River National Park, a UNESCO-listed Biosphere Reserve with over 200 plant species found nowhere else on Earth. You'll stop at Wave Rock, a 15-metre-high granite formation frozen in time for 2.7 billion years, then set up camp at Four Mile Campground where the wilderness rolls to the sea. The first night is spent under stars at the edge of the national park.

Day two brings a 3 km hike up East Mount Barren with scrambling near the top and views over Culham and Hamersley Inlets, followed by a 90-minute Dabungool Cultural Experience in Esperance led by local Wudjari Nyungar mother and daughter. They guide you on a coastal walk to learn about the six seasons, bushfood and medicine plants that have sustained their people for thousands of years. By afternoon you're at Lucky Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park, a beach so white it squeaks, often shared with western grey kangaroos. Day three stays at Lucky Bay with the option to tackle Frenchman Peak, a Grade 5 climb with 360° views of aquamarine bays and the Recherche Archipelago, or explore the park's trails and turquoise waters at your own pace.

The route then moves west through Bremer Bay, where two short coastal walks offer views over the ocean and chances to spot seabirds and migrating whales. You'll camp at Tozer's Bush Camp, a rustic hideaway in native bushland. Day five takes you to William Bay National Park to swim at Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks, then into the towering karri forests to climb partway up the Dave Evans Bicentennial Tree, a 75-metre giant with a spiral of metal spikes embedded in the trunk. The final day begins with a walk along the Cape to Cape Track at Hamelin Bay, where stingrays glide up to the shoreline, then moves into Margaret River for lunch and free time at Surfers Point. Two tasting venues, including a celebrated cellar door, let you sample the region's wine and local produce before the drive back to Perth, arriving around 7:00 pm.

Transport is by air-conditioned minibus with an expert local guide leading throughout. Accommodation is swag camping with basic facilities at five different camps and bush hideaways.
