You’ll taste Margaret River wines straight from boutique vineyards, walk under towering karri trees with honey on your tongue, explore ancient caves and climb Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse where two oceans meet. With pickup from Perth and local guides who really know their stuff, this 3-day trip leaves space for laughter and those small surprises that make travel stick with you.
We’d barely left Perth when our driver, Pete, started telling us about the old timber towns and how the light changes along the coast — he was right. By the time we reached Mandurah for coffee, I could smell salt and pastry in the air and felt like I’d already shaken off city noise. Busselton Jetty was longer than I expected (1.8km — who even builds that?) and walking out there with gulls wheeling overhead made me forget about my phone for a bit.
The first night in Margaret River town felt quiet but not lonely — you know that feeling? Dinner at a local spot was full of chatter from other tables. The next day, our guide Tash led us into Boranup Karri Forest. She stopped us mid-walk and said “just listen.” It was just wind and birds but it felt huge. We tasted honey right there — sticky fingers, eucalyptus in the air. Mammoth Cave was colder than I thought it’d be; my glasses fogged up coming back out into the sun.
I didn’t expect to laugh so much at a wine tasting (maybe that’s obvious). The vineyard owner told us stories about his family and poured something he called “dangerously drinkable.” Cheese came next — sharp and creamy at once — and someone dropped a cracker which set off a chain of giggles around the table. Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse looked dramatic against a sky that couldn’t decide if it wanted to rain or clear up. I still think about how small you feel standing where two oceans meet.
The last morning started with coffee at Yahava KoffeeWorks; I tried to sound like I knew what “single origin” meant but probably failed. Free time on Margaret River’s main street meant poking around little shops with no real plan. When we finally rolled back toward Perth, everyone was quieter — not tired exactly, just sort of full in a way that sticks with you longer than you expect.
