The experience

The path starts above ground. You move through Yallingup bushland on a series of interactive installations that explain how this limestone ridge formed and what the local Noongar people have known about this place for thousands of years. It's not a rushed thing. You set the pace, stop when something catches your eye, read what you want to read. The installations are there to fill in the gaps, but they don't crowd you.

Once you've wound through the Ancient Lands Experience, the cave entrance appears. From there you descend into Ngilgi Cave itself, where boardwalks carry you through chambers lit to show off the stalactites, stalagmites, helictites and the coloured mineral shawls that coat the walls. A guide is stationed in the centre of the cave if you have questions, but mostly you're moving at your own speed, turning corners to find the Fairy Cave, Cupid's Corner, and the junior explorer's tunnel: a tighter passage that kids actually want to crawl through instead of being dragged past. The whole thing is accessible, which means you're not scrambling or squeezing, just walking and looking.

The self-guided format means you don't have to keep pace with a group or wait for someone else's questions to be answered. You spend as long as you want in each chamber, and if a formation doesn't interest you, you move on. Guides are there at key points if you want context, but the experience doesn't depend on them.
