The experience

The tour starts by driving through South Hobart's historic buildings, then stops at Cascade Gardens to see one of Australia's finest Rhododendron collections and the 1824 Cascade brewery building. From there you pass the Cascades Female Factory convict site from 1835, where the guide shares its history and points out the Hobart Rivulet flowing down from Mount Wellington: platypus have been sighted here. The route then moves through Fern Tree's tall ferns and cool climate gardens before reaching the mountain proper.

Halfway up, you stop at the Lost Freight Cafe for a hot drink, then take a short walk to the Springs lookout to see Hobart, the Tasman Bridge, Bruny Island, the Derwent River mouth and the Tasman Peninsula. The guide shares stories of the former Springs Hotel and its pioneering weather forecasting. As you climb higher, the views of Hobart expand. At the Chalet, you stop among the resilient snow gums and flowering banksia trees to see the unique dolerite hut and a waterfall. The guide, who studied botany and geology at a local university, explains the mountain's ecology and shares stories from decades of experience here.

The final drive takes you above the tree line to the summit, where you have free time at the viewing platforms. From here you see the Tasmanian alpine vegetation, distinctive rock formations, and on clear days, mountains of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The tour includes an air-conditioned vehicle with a sound system and covers four hours of driving and stops combined.
