The experience

The drive from Hobart up to kunanyi/Mt Wellington started out ordinary enough. Just city streets and a bit of drizzle on the windows. But as we climbed, the trees changed. Our guide, Dave, kept pointing out how the eucalyptus smell gets sharper up here. He’d stop mid-sentence sometimes just to let us listen: wind rattling through those skinny trunks, a magpie calling somewhere. I hadn’t realized how close real wilderness was to Hobart until that moment.

At the summit, it was colder than I expected (should’ve packed gloves), but wow: the view over the Derwent River just sort of opens you up. The Observatory deck felt like standing on the edge of something old and wild. There were these patches of snow left over from last week, and some local kids were kicking them around while their mum tried to take a photo. I tried to say “kunanyi” properly: Dave smiled but didn’t correct me. The clouds moved fast. One minute you see all of Hobart laid out below, next minute you’re inside a cloud and it’s just white silence.

Coming down, we stopped at The Springs for coffee (which tasted even better with cold fingers). There’s this little garden there, Exhibition Gardens, with mossy stones and bright green ferns that almost glow when the sun breaks through. It’s not a long walk, but it felt good to move after shivering up top. On the way back into town, Dave pulled over by these old stone walls: the Cascades Female Factory ruins. He told us about women and kids locked up there in the 1820s. Hard to picture now with birds singing in the trees overhead. I still think about those stories when I see old brickwork anywhere.
