The experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup from nine locations within 5km of the city centre, then heads straight to kunanyi (Mount Wellington). At 1272m, the summit gives you views across Hobart and the surrounding landscape. The guide handles the drive while you take in the air and the vistas. From there the minivan loops through Hobart's CBD, passing Salamanca Place, Parliament House, Cascade Brewery, Battery Point and the Tasman Bridge with live commentary on board.

Richmond comes next: a small township in the Coal Valley wine region with sandstone colonial buildings, Australia's oldest bridge and gaol, and convict-era streets. You have time to walk around, grab lunch at a local spot, or browse the art and craft shops. On Saturdays only, the tour includes a 75-minute stop at Salamanca Market, where 300 stallholders sell fresh produce, coffee, homemade food, souvenirs and handmade goods. This is when the tour runs 8 hours instead of 6.5.

The minivan is air-conditioned and seats a small group, so the pace stays relaxed. Your guide is a local with deep knowledge of Tasmania, and you're free to spend your time at each stop however you want: some people linger on the mountain, others take their time in Richmond's shops. Hotel drop-off is included at the end of the day.
