The experience

You paddle the Pambula River alongside an Indigenous guide from Twofold Aboriginal Corporation, who shares the river's profound meaning in Aboriginal culture, history and lore. The journey is built around what the guide knows and what the landscape holds, not around a fixed itinerary of stops. As you paddle, you learn local wildlife names and gather knowledge about traditional bush foods. The water itself becomes the classroom.

Midway through, you reach Severs Beach, a place with thousands of years of Indigenous heritage woven into it. You pull the kayaks ashore and settle in for morning tea: lemon myrtle slices, fresh fruit, coffee, tea and juice. The pause lets the landscape settle around you before the paddle back. The whole outing takes four hours from start to finish.

Kayaking equipment is provided. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness to paddle for this length of time. The activity is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or pregnancy. Children from age 3 can join.
