The experience

The tour starts with hotel pickup and a stop at the Dunes Viewing area before you set out on the Valley of the Winds walk with your guide. The 36 domes of Kata Tjuta (known as "many heads" in the Pitjantjatjara language) were formed over hundreds of millions of years, and your guide will explain the geology, history and cultural significance as you follow creek beds and wind through the heart of these formations. The walk itself is 5.4 km and graded difficult by the national park, so you'll need sturdy walking shoes, a high level of fitness, and 2 litres of water per person.

After the hike, you settle in with canapés and a choice of sparkling wine, red wine, white wine, lemonade or orange juice to watch the outback sunset. The tour returns to your hotel about an hour after sunset, so plan the rest of your day around an afternoon and early evening commitment. You'll travel in an air-conditioned coach with an accredited local driver guide throughout.
