The experience

The tour runs through Kalgoorlie and Boulder as two separate towns you can explore at your own speed. You get a map, an information booklet and a headset, then follow the audio guide through over 50 stops: heritage hotels, the WA School of Mines, the Super Pit Lookout, and smaller sites that tell the story of the 1928 gold discovery and the boom that followed. The headset lets you hear the details without missing the place itself, and you decide how long to linger at each stop.

The stops include the Goatcher Curtain, a working stage curtain believed to be the last of its kind in Australia, created by theatre artist Philip Goatcher and depicting the Bay of Naples. You'll learn about the 2010 earthquake that reshaped Boulder, the hidden tunnels beneath pubs where gold was traded, and the lives of the people who arrived when there were 20 men to every woman. The tour is built for solo travellers and small groups who want to move at their own pace without a guide keeping time.

Questa Casa, the oldest working brothel until Covid, is one of the heritage sites on the route. If you want to step inside for a closer look, that admission is paid directly to the venue and is not included in the tour price. The whole experience takes 3–4 hours depending on how many stops you visit and how long you spend at each one.
