The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the smell—sort of sharp and sweet, like eucalyptus but heavier. We met outside Crossings Bakery (I almost walked into the wrong door, classic me), and our guide—Dave, with sunburned arms—was already chatting with a couple from Perth. He made sure everyone had their seat sorted before we set off. I liked that he didn’t rush us; he even waited for someone to run back for their sunglasses.

Driving through those Karri forests felt like slipping into another world. The trees are so tall it’s almost dizzying when you look up—sunlight comes in patches, kind of gold and green at the same time. Dave pointed out some wildflowers I’d never heard of (I forgot the names instantly, sorry Dave) and we stopped once just to listen. It was weirdly quiet except for some birds and the crunch under our boots. You don’t really get that kind of silence much.

I didn’t expect the Yeagarup Dunes to be so huge. We climbed up one (my shoes filled with sand instantly), and then Dave showed us how to sandslide down—my attempt was more rolling than sliding but everyone laughed anyway. The wind up there tasted salty, even though we weren’t at the ocean yet. After that we drove through low heathland until suddenly there was this view—the Warren River meeting the sea, all frothy and wild looking. We just stood there for a bit, nobody really talking.

We finished with homemade cake and tea on a picnic rug that kept blowing up at the corners. Someone asked Dave if he ever gets tired of this place—he just grinned and shook his head. I still think about that patchwork light in the forest sometimes, especially when things get noisy back home.
