Your day starts with a pickup from your Cairns accommodation, then a scenic coastal drive north through Port Douglas and sugar cane fields to Mossman. From there the road heads into World Heritage-listed Daintree National Park, crossing the Daintree River on the only operating cable ferry in tropical Australia. Once across, the landscape shifts: the road narrows and the rainforest towers overhead, a 135-million-year-old Gondwana forest that has remained unchanged for millions of years.
The first stop is Alexandra Range Lookout, where you get a bird's-eye view over the Daintree River, Port Douglas, and on clear days, landmarks as far south as Cairns. Then comes the Marrdja Boardwalk, a guided walk through the ancient rainforest that crosses a complex mangrove swamp system. Your guide points out the root structures and explains how the local flora and fauna have adapted over millions of years. The boardwalk name itself comes from the local Aboriginal language and means Rainforest Walk. After the walk, you head to Kulki Day Use Area and Cape Tribulation Beach for lunch around noon (included if you booked the picnic lunch option). This stretch of coastline is where the rainforest meets the reef, the only place on the planet where two World Heritage parks sit directly side by side: the Daintree National Park and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. You'll have time to walk the beach and access the lookout on the Cape Tribulation headland.
On the return toward the Daintree River, you stop for a wildlife cruise spotting saltwater crocodiles, egrets, pythons, tree snakes and butterflies in the mangrove systems. Afternoon tea follows, then you head to Mossman Gorge, where a clear mountain river cuts through thick rainforest over giant granite boulders. If conditions are safe, you can swim. Otherwise you can relax by the water. The final stop is Rex Range Lookout on the Great Barrier Reef Drive for photos before heading back to Cairns, arriving around 6:30pm.
