The Experience
"Did you see that frog blinking at us?" Bridgette whispered, her torch beam catching the tiniest green creature I’d ever noticed. I honestly didn’t expect to care much about bugs and frogs when I signed up for this night walk in the Cairns Botanic Gardens, but there we were—four of us huddled around a patch of damp leaves, trying not to breathe too loud. The air felt thick, like it was holding its breath too. It smelled a bit earthy and sweet, almost like wet tea leaves. Bridgette—who’s spent more hours here than I’ve probably spent sleeping this year—seemed to know where every spider web hid.
She had this way of making you look closer. “Hold your light just above the mushroom cap,” she said, and my hands shook so much I nearly dropped the camera (which she’d set up for me because I’m hopeless with settings). The macro lens made everything feel huge—the glisten on a beetle’s back looked like polished glass. At one point, someone’s phone buzzed and we all jumped; it felt weirdly intimate out there in the dark with just our little group and Bridgette’s quiet encouragements. She laughed when I called a mantis “the boss” because it really did look like it was judging us.
I guess what surprised me most was how quickly time slipped by. We started when the gardens were closing down for everyone else—just before 7pm—and by the time we wandered back toward the entrance, my shoes were muddy and my memory card was full of things I’d never have spotted on my own. There’s something about seeing Cairns at night through a macro lens that sticks with you. Sometimes when I’m walking home now, I catch myself looking for tiny flashes of movement in the shadows.
