The experience
Most visitors walk the Cairns Botanic Gardens during the day and see plants. On this night walk, you move along the boardwalk following a route Bridgette adapts each season to wherever the nocturnal creatures are active. She stops at host plants and habitats where tree frogs shelter, where net-casting spiders set up at dusk, and where caterpillars feed. You stand still while she points out the eyeshine before the animal itself comes into focus: a Papuan Frogmouth sitting motionless on a branch, a Striped Possum moving through the canopy, a huntsman spider the size of your hand on the bark. The walk lasts two hours, and you spend as long as you need at each sighting.
Photography is woven through the whole thing. Bridgette gives guidance on camera settings and framing on the spot, so whether you're shooting on a phone or carrying a macro lens, she adjusts her advice to what you have.
