The Experience

"You’re actually allowed to hold him?" That’s what I blurted out when our guide, Mel, handed me a sleepy-looking koala at The Pier in Cairns. His fur felt softer than I expected—sort of like an old sweater you can’t throw away. I could smell eucalyptus somewhere close, or maybe that was just my nerves. My daughter kept giggling at the way his little claws gripped my arm (not too tight, thankfully). Mel told us about how these woodlands are shrinking every year, but she said it in this gentle way—like she’d talked to hundreds of people but still cared if we got it.

The whole place is set up so you wander through different Australian habitats—rainforest first, with that thick green smell and the sound of water dripping somewhere overhead. We saw a freshwater croc blink at us from behind glass (I jumped; everyone else laughed), and then there were the mangroves, all tangled roots and weird mud smells. It’s not just animals behind glass though—there was this bit where you could touch some of the bark and leaves they’d brought inside. I liked that more than I thought I would. My son tried to pronounce “cassowary” and Li, one of the staff, cracked up—he said he’d heard worse attempts from tourists.

We finished in the Outback zone—red dirt underfoot, fake sun beating down from these lights overhead. It was kind of cheesy but also kind of great? There was a wallaby hopping around like he owned the place. By then my youngest had melted down (too many new things), so we ducked out for snacks before looping back for our souvenir photo with the koala. Honestly, I didn’t expect to care about that picture but now it’s on our fridge back home.
