You meet them at the Deck Restaurant in the morning, and within minutes you're boarding the Whalesong — the only purpose-built whale watching vessel operating out of Busselton, and one of just two in all of Western Australia. The skipper has been running these tours longer than anyone else in the region, which matters more than it sounds when you're trying to spot a whale in open water.

Once you're out in Geographe Bay, a marine biologist travels with you the whole time, pointing out what you're actually seeing instead of just saying "look over there." The bay itself has a reputation — it's rated worldwide as one of the better whale destinations, and the humpbacks migrating through know it. When the skipper spots a spout or splashing, he positions the vessel so you get the best angle for photos without the boat feeling crowded or chaotic. The lower deck wraps all the way around with safety rails, so you're not funneled through the cabin to reach the front — you can move freely and find your spot.
