The Experience

I didn’t know what to expect when we set off from Busselton that morning. There’s something about driving those winding roads near Geographe Bay — you catch glimpses of the water between trees, and it’s just so blue it almost looks fake. Our guide, Steve (who grew up around here), kept pointing out little things I’d never have noticed: old shipwreck stories, why the sand squeaks under your shoes. The air smelled like salt and eucalyptus — hard to describe but you’ll know it when you breathe it in.

We stopped at Leeuwin-Naturaliste and wandered through Meelup Regional Park. I kept getting distracted by the crunch of leaves underfoot and these tiny birds darting everywhere. At Bunker Bay, Steve pulled over so we could walk right up to the edge — those limestone cliffs are older than my sense of time can handle. He said something about them being 1.3 million years old? I was honestly more focused on not tripping over a rock while staring at the ocean. Dolphins popped up out past the granite boulders — not for long, but enough for everyone to get excited. Someone in our group tried to spot whales (wrong season), which made us all laugh.

The best part might’ve been lunch. We sat outside with a platter full of local cheese and fruit, plus a glass of Margaret River wine (or coffee if you wanted). There were kangaroos just lying around in the sun like they owned the place — one scratched its ear and looked right at me. I still think about that moment; it felt weirdly peaceful after all the walking and chatter.
