The experience
Li was already grinning at us as we fumbled into our jackets at Adventure Bay: “windproof, trust me!” she said, and she wasn’t kidding. The air smelled salty and sharp, with a hint of eucalyptus from somewhere inland. I tried to ask about the word for sea eagle in Palawa Kani (I butchered it), and Li just laughed, shaking her head as she pointed out the boat bobbing near the jetty. There were maybe a dozen of us, all bundled up and shuffling a bit nervously. One guy had brought his toddler in a puffy red suit that made everyone smile.
The engine started up with this low rumble that you could feel through your feet.
