The Experience

You know that weird silence right before your name gets called? That’s what I remember most, standing at the top of the Kangaroo Point Cliffs in Brisbane with my helmet slightly askew, gloves too big, and the river below looking way farther than twenty meters. Our guide, Dave (who had this calm way of talking like he’d done this a thousand times), checked my harness and grinned — “You’ll forget about your knees shaking once you’re halfway down.” Maybe. The city felt close but also far away, boats gliding under us while I tried not to overthink things.

I’d never abseiled before, so the safety talk actually helped — lots of jokes about gravity and some practical tips that made me trust the rope a bit more than my own instincts.
