The Experience
You know that weird silence right before your name gets called? That’s what I remember most, standing at the top of the Kangaroo Point Cliffs in Brisbane with my helmet slightly askew, gloves too big, and the river below looking way farther than twenty meters. Our guide, Dave (who had this calm way of talking like he’d done this a thousand times), checked my harness and grinned — “You’ll forget about your knees shaking once you’re halfway down.” Maybe. The city felt close but also far away, boats gliding under us while I tried not to overthink things.
I’d never abseiled before, so the safety talk actually helped — lots of jokes about gravity and some practical tips that made me trust the rope a bit more than my own instincts. The first step was honestly the hardest; there’s this split second where you lean back and every muscle wants to chicken out. I could smell sunscreen and eucalyptus from someone’s backpack. Then suddenly it was just me, the rope, and this gritty rock face under my hands. My shoes scraped against it (not gracefully), but after a few meters I started to look around — the skyline poking through gum trees, kayakers waving up at us like we were braver than we felt.
There were a couple of kids in our group who went down twice, laughing like it was nothing. One woman tried to film her descent but dropped her phone (don’t do that). At the bottom, everyone high-fived awkwardly — sweaty palms and all — and Dave told us we’d just done something most locals haven’t even tried. I still think about that feeling when my feet hit solid ground again; it’s sort of relief mixed with this weird pride you can’t explain unless you’ve been up there looking down at Brisbane’s river curling past.
What’s included
