The Experience

You know that weird hum a Segway makes when you first step on? That’s how our Brisbane Segway tour started—me wobbling just a bit, helmet slightly askew, while our guide (Sam) grinned like he’d seen it all before. The city was already alive: magpies fussing in the trees near South Bank Parklands and someone playing guitar by the big BRISBANE sign. I didn’t expect to feel so tall gliding past Streets Beach—almost eye-level with café tables—and Sam pointed out a couple of locals doing tai chi in the grass. The river looked silver and wide from here.

We zipped through the City Botanic Gardens where it suddenly smelled like wet earth and eucalyptus—maybe because it had rained earlier? Sam slowed us down to spot a Water Dragon lizard sunning itself on a rock. He told us they’re harmless but still, I kept my distance (lizards are unpredictable, right?). Crossing Goodwill Bridge felt like flying for a second—wind in my face, view opening up to skyscrapers and the curve of the river. There was this moment on Story Bridge where I just stopped talking and listened: cars below, someone laughing behind me, my own heart beating faster than I expected.

I’m not great with heights but somehow being on two wheels made it easier—I guess because you’re focused on balancing. At Kangaroo Point Cliffs we paused again; rock climbers dangled against orange stone while city lights started flickering on across the water. Sam told us about how people picnic here at sunset (I can see why). We looped back past Eagle Street Pier where the smell of grilled fish drifted from somewhere I couldn’t quite spot. It all felt fast and slow at once—like Brisbane showing off every side of itself without hurrying you along.
