The Experience

The River Torrens cuts through Adelaide's city center and northern parklands, and a guided kayak is the only way to see it from the water. You'll paddle past the Adelaide Oval—the landmark that anchors the city's sporting and cultural calendar—and along the Riverbank Precinct, moving at your own pace while the guide handles the route and the history. The river is home to black swans, pacific black ducks and various fish species; they're visible from the kayak if you're watching the banks and the water as you move.

Groups stay small—a maximum of eight paddlers per tour—so there's room to ask questions and no feeling of a crowd on the water. The guide leads from a kayak alongside you, offering full instruction at the start and a safety briefing before you push off. Double and single kayaks are available; children aged 8 to 12 paddle in a double with someone aged 13 or older. No paddling experience is necessary; the instruction covers what you need to move the kayak and handle the river safely. The 90-minute paddle departs from Pinky Flat, a launch point in the heart of the city, so you're on the water within minutes of arriving.

All gear—kayak, paddle, personal flotation device—is provided. Public transportation options are available near the launch point if you're not driving. The experience suits all fitness levels, though the operator does not recommend it for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. Minimum age is 8 years old; the maximum weight limit is 120 kg.
