Kayak through sheltered creeks where dolphins actually show up

A 90-minute kayaking tour through Adelaide's Dolphin Sanctuary and Mangrove Forest, 30 minutes from the CBD, with a guide, kayak and all gear included. Small groups of no more than 16 paddle the creeks where Port River Dolphins live alongside native birds and marine life. Children from age 8 are welcome, and an adult can share a kayak with younger paddlers.

The Experience

Ninety minutes of paddling through mangrove-lined creeks is the setup. You get a sit-in kayak, life vest, paddle and paddling jacket if you need one, plus a waterproof container for your camera. The guide leads a small group—no more than 16 people—at an easy pace through the Dolphin Sanctuary, a sheltered network of waterways just 30 minutes from Adelaide's city center. This is the most environmentally sensitive way to move through the dolphins' habitat without disturbing them, and the slow speed gives you time to watch, photograph and listen to the guide's stories about the area.

The Port River Dolphins are the draw, and they do come to play in these creeks. When they show up, it's the kind of moment that sticks. The guide knows where to look and when to hold still. Beyond the dolphins, the mangrove forest itself is full of birds and other marine life—the whole ecosystem is visible from water level in a way a land-based walk never shows it. The pace is unhurried, so there's room for photos and questions without feeling rushed.

Bring insect repellent, sunscreen, a drink and snacks, and shoes that can get wet. A waterproof bag for your phone or camera is useful, though the tour provides a container. Children 12 and under paddle with an adult in the same kayak. The minimum age is 8, and you'll need at least a moderate level of fitness to paddle for 90 minutes—the guide will confirm any concerns about fit or physical ability when you book.

Will I definitely see dolphins on this kayak tour?

The Port River Dolphins live in these creeks and do come to play, but sightings depend on the day and time. The guide knows the area well and positions the group where dolphins are most likely to appear, and the slow pace gives you time to spot them when they do.

Can my child go on this tour?

Children from age 8 are welcome. Children 12 and under paddle in the same kayak as an adult, so you'll be paddling together rather than in separate boats.

How physically demanding is 90 minutes of kayaking?

The tour is easy-paced with plenty of stops for photos and storytelling, so it's not a fitness challenge. You do need a moderate level of fitness to paddle for the full 90 minutes, and the operator can advise on any concerns about your ability or fit in the kayak when you book.

What should I wear and bring?

Wear shoes that can get wet and bring sunscreen, insect repellent, drinks, snacks and your camera. The tour provides the paddling jacket and life vest, and a waterproof container for valuables, so you don't need to buy or bring your own gear.
