Hands-On Beekeeping in Aruba: Work with Live Bees
Step into a working apiary and handle the bees yourself, not watch from behind glass.
The Cunucu Bee Adventure is a hands-on beekeeping experience at a family-run apiary in Aruba where you suit up in protective gear and work alongside live bees in their hives. After an introduction to beekeeping and a tasting of honey and related products, you enter the working apiary to observe hives, learn how bees are cared for in Aruba's climate, and explore the surrounding cunucu landscape. A live guide in English, Spanish or Dutch leads the 90-minute activity, which suits families with children from age 5 and all fitness levels.

The experience
The bee suit goes on before you step into the apiary. This is not a demonstration or a staged tour. It's a real working operation, which means the bees and their behavior are never quite the same twice. You'll see the hives up close, watch how the frames are managed, and understand what it takes to keep bees healthy in Aruba's arid environment. The guide walks you through the work that happens every day at this family-run site, and you get to be part of it rather than observing from a distance.
Before suiting up, you taste honey and other products the apiary makes, so you know what all that beekeeping effort produces. The cunucu, Aruba's traditional countryside landscape, surrounds the apiary, and the guide explains how bees fit into the island's agriculture and ecosystem. Bottled water is provided throughout the 90 minutes, and the location is accessible by public transportation if you don't have a rental car.
Children from age 5 are welcome, and the activity suits any fitness level. The only exception is travelers with bee allergies, for whom this experience isn't safe. A live guide conducts the experience in English, Spanish or Dutch, so language isn't a barrier to understanding what you're doing and why.

What exactly do I do inside the apiary once I'm suited up?
You work alongside the bees in their hives, observing the frames and the brood, and learning how the beekeeper manages them day to day. The guide shows you the different roles bees play and explains how they survive and thrive in Aruba's dry climate. You're not just watching. You're handling the equipment and getting an up-close look at how a real apiary operates.
Is this experience safe if I've never been around bees before?
The protective bee suit covers your whole body, and the guide manages the hives carefully so the bees stay calm. This is a working apiary, not a staged attraction, so the bees behave naturally, but the suit and the guide's experience keep you safe. What is the cunucu, and what will I see there?
The cunucu is Aruba's traditional countryside: the arid landscape dotted with low vegetation, divi-divi trees and local plants.
