Aruba has a black sand beach most visitors never find.

An open-air jeep safari across Aruba's outback, led by a local guide through Arikok National Park and its surrounding terrain. You'll visit the Natural Pool (Conchi), California Lighthouse, Bushiribana gold mill ruins, and several beaches including the island's only black sand cove. The tour runs 4.5 hours with pickup and drop-off included, and a guide who speaks English, Spanish or Dutch answers questions as you move between stops. Children from age 4 are welcome; the route is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries or serious cardiovascular concerns.

The Experience

What makes this tour work is that a jeep gets you to places a regular car can't reach. Arikok National Park covers a fifth of the island and holds most of the stops—the Natural Pool sits in a rock formation where waves spray over limestone, the Bushiribana ruins are the remains of a 19th-century gold mill now framed by sea cliffs, and the Ayo and Casibari rock formations rise from the scrubland like something from another landscape. A guide drives and narrates, so you're not hunting for directions or worrying about the road surface.

The beaches on this route aren't the resort kind. Andicuri Beach on the east coast has limestone ledges for shade and waves that draw surfers and kitesurfers. Wariruri Beach is about 60 meters square, rocky and exposed—good for photos of surfers, not for swimming. Black Stone Beach is the anomaly: Aruba's only black sand, edged with sharp dark stones. The California Lighthouse stands 30 meters tall on the northwestern tip and gives you views across the island and open water. Alto Vista Chapel, built in 1952 on the site of a 1750 mission, sits on the hills above the north shore with its bright yellow exterior visible from a distance.

The tour also stops at Philip's Animal Garden, a wildlife sanctuary holding more than 60 rescued species—admission is free and the stop takes about 30 minutes. Bottled water and a bandana to keep dust down during the drive are included. The pace is steady but not rushed; you're moving between stops in an open jeep on roads that range from paved to rough. Pickup and drop-off from your hotel are part of the booking, and the guide can answer questions about what you're seeing as the day unfolds.

Operated by Around Aruba Tours

Is this one for you?The jeep handles rough terrain and narrow tracks that regular cars can't navigate, which is what puts you at the Natural Pool and the remote beaches instead of the crowded resort strip. The 4.5-hour pace keeps moving between stops without long walks or waiting, though the open-air ride and uneven ground mean you need to be comfortable with heat, dust, and moderate physical activity.

Top questions

What is the Natural Pool and why do people visit it?

The Natural Pool, also called Conchi, is a small depression carved into volcanic rock within Arikok National Park where waves spray over the stone rim as the tide comes in. It's a unique rock formation on a remote stretch of coast, and visitors come to see the water movement and the rugged terrain around it.

Can I swim at the beaches on this tour?

Andicuri Beach has clear water and is used for bodyboarding and kitesurfing, though the waves are constant. Wariruri Beach has strong currents and waves unsuitable for swimming. Black Stone Beach is for viewing and photos, not swimming. The Natural Pool itself is a viewing spot, not a swimming destination.

How long does the tour take and what's included in the price?

The tour runs 4.5 hours and includes hotel pickup and drop-off, a local guide, bottled water, and a bandana. Admission to Philip's Animal Garden is free. The guide speaks English, Spanish or Dutch depending on your preference.

Is this tour suitable for young children?

Children from age 4 are welcome on the tour. The jeep is open-air and the stops involve walking on uneven terrain and rock formations, so children should be comfortable with that kind of movement and heat exposure.

What is the Bushiribana site?

Bushiribana is the ruins of a gold mill that operated in the 19th century during Aruba's gold rush. The stone structures now stand on a cliff above the sea and offer views of the coastline; the site is popular for photos and learning about the island's mining history.

Why is Black Stone Beach different from other Aruba beaches?

Black Stone Beach is the only beach on Aruba with black sand instead of white. It's surrounded by eroded black stones that are sharp and edged, making it a natural curiosity and a popular photo stop, though not a swimming beach.
