An open-air jeep safari across Aruba's outback, led by a local guide through Arikok National Park and its surrounding terrain. The Experience

What makes this tour work is that a jeep gets you to places a regular car can't reach. Arikok National Park covers a fifth of the island and holds most of the stops—the Natural Pool sits in a rock formation where waves spray over limestone, the Bushiribana ruins are the remains of a 19th-century gold mill now framed by sea cliffs, and the Ayo and Casibari rock formations rise from the scrubland like something from another landscape. A guide drives and narrates, so you're not hunting for directions or worrying about the road surface.

The beaches on this route aren't the resort kind. Andicuri Beach on the east coast has limestone ledges for shade and waves that draw surfers and kitesurfers. Wariruri Beach is about 60 meters square, rocky and exposed—good for photos of surfers, not for swimming. Black Stone Beach is the anomaly: Aruba's only black sand, edged with sharp dark stones. The California Lighthouse stands 30 meters tall on the northwestern tip and gives you views across the island and open water. Alto Vista Chapel, built in 1952 on the site of a 1750 mission, sits on the hills above the north shore with its bright yellow exterior visible from a distance.

The tour also stops at Philip's Animal Garden, a wildlife sanctuary holding more than 60 rescued species—admission is free and the stop takes about 30 minutes. Bottled water and a bandana to keep dust down during the drive are included. The pace is steady but not rushed; you're moving between stops in an open jeep on roads that range from paved to rough.
