The second half of the day moves between the pagan and Christian worlds. Garni Temple, built in the 1st century AD by King Trdat, is the only surviving monument from Armenia's pre-Christian era: a Hellenistic temple dedicated to the sun god Mithra. Geghard Monastery, founded in the 4th century by Gregory the Illuminator, takes its name from the legendary spear that pierced Christ's body. Both are carved into or built against the landscape in ways that make them feel less like museums and more like places where people actually lived and worshipped. The tour ends at Khor Virap Monastery, where the view opens onto Mount Ararat: the mountain that dominates Armenian identity and appears on the national seal.
